Chapter Eleven

Sometimes the questions are complicated, and the answers are simple. -Dr. Seuss

“So why doesn’t Phoenix have to go to school? That’s not fair.”

“Because we have a meeting with his caseworkers and the detective. I’m sure he’d rather go to school,” I said.

Phoenix took another bite of cereal from his cup. “Not really.”

“Not helping.”

“Nic, go take your pill and brush your teeth. The bus is going to be here in like three minutes.”

“I don’t know why I can’t just drive!” he shouted, walking up the stairs.

“Because you don’t have a license!” I shouted back.

“How are they going to find out who my biological parents are?”

“I don’t know, honey. I think probably detectives will go through a database from when you were born to see if there’s any missing children from that time. I mean, if my extensive knowledge from cases are like this is correct. I studied a lot through Law and Order: SVU.”

“Yeah that seems legit. You know, my mom- I mean, LeAnne has a sister named Gretchen. She’s younger than her. Maybe she had me and gave me to LeAnne. I mean, we spent a lot of time with her. She lived with my grandparents when us kids did.”

“Hmm. We’ll tell them that today as well.”

“That would explain why LeAnne ran off all the time, right? I mean, if I wasn’t even her kid then why stick around? And if Aunt Gretchen is my mom then I lived with her most of my childhood. She kind of hung out with her friends a lot and drank but she was there.”

I hugged him. “I love you.”

“Love you, too. What was that for?”

“I just love you. You are a very strong person, Phoenix.”

He smiled. “Thanks. I just am how I am. I don’t know how to be anything else.”

“And I don’t want you to ever be anything other than exactly who you are,” I said. I got up and hollered up the stairs, “I hear the bus!”

Nic ran down the stairs. He kissed me on the cheek quickly. “I took my pill and brushed my teeth.”

“Good boy. Have a good day.”

“Thanks. Hey, good luck today man.”

Phoenix looked up from pulling on his boot. “Hey thanks, bud.”

“No problem. Text me and let me know how it goes.”

“I will. Love you, bro.”

He paused at the door for a minute. “Love you too, big brother.” And then he disappeared out the door to catch his bus.

Phoenix’s face broke out into a huge smile as he shook his head. “I love that kid.”

“He loves you too. He may not always show it, but he really does. He worries about you a lot.”

 “Yeah?”

“Oh yeah. Nicky isn’t great at expressing emotion all the time. He doesn’t do well with the difficult stuff. He internalizes a lot. And he’s worried about what’s going to happen. He didn’t cry when I told him about the tests, but he was very quiet. He was worried about who your biological parents are and if you’re leaving.
